🏗️ Concrete — specification, performance, production and conformity, PN-EN 206
In short
The basic product standard for concrete. The catalogue card lists seven areas of its requirements — from constituents to conformity criteria — and states which kinds of concrete it covers. The test is performed according to PN-EN 206+A2:2021-08 (wersja polska; wprowadza EN 206:2013+A2:2021 [IDT]); Kind of document: A PRODUCT standard — specification, performance, production and conformity. The procedure comprises 5 steps; it is used for: Specifying concrete for structures cast in situ and for precast components, Factory production control in ready-mixed concrete and precast plants, Assessing the conformity of concrete delivered to site.

Overview
THE SCOPE FROM THE PKN CATALOGUE CARD, QUOTED VERBATIM: "(1) This European Standard applies to concrete used for structures cast in situ, precast structures, and structural precast products used in buildings and structures. (2) The concrete covered by this European Standard may be: - normal-weight, heavy-weight and lightweight; - cast in situ, ready-mixed or produced in a plant for precast concrete products; - compacted or self-compacting, so as to contain no more than a negligible amount of entrapped air, disregarding air introduced by air-entrainment. (3) This standard specifies requirements for: - the constituents of concrete; - the properties of fresh and hardened concrete and their verification; - the limitations on the composition of concrete; - the specification of concrete; - the delivery of fresh concrete; - the production control procedures; - the conformity criteria and the evaluation of conformity."
SEVEN AREAS OF REQUIREMENTS — AND WHY THAT LIST MATTERS MORE THAN THE NAME OF THE STANDARD. Item (3) of the scope shows that the document covers the whole cycle: from the constituents, through the properties of the fresh mix and of the hardened concrete together with THEIR VERIFICATION, the limitations on composition, the specification, the delivery and the production control, to the conformity criteria and the evaluation of conformity. A laboratory testing concrete usually encounters only one of these areas — verification of properties — but a judgement on the conformity of the product requires the others. A report on a strength test is therefore not a judgement on the conformity of the concrete with the standard.
ITEM (2) SETTLES WHAT THE STANDARD COVERS. The list takes in normal-weight, heavy-weight and lightweight concrete; cast in situ, ready-mixed and from a precast plant; compacted and self-compacting. The last proviso is conditional: the concrete is to contain "no more than a negligible amount of entrapped air, disregarding air introduced by air-entrainment" — deliberately introduced air is thus something other than accidentally entrapped air, and only the latter is limited.
A TRAP IN THE CATALOGUE CARD — A FIELD THAT POINTS BACKWARDS. The card of PN-EN 206+A2:2021-08 carries a "Superseded by" field reading "PN-EN 206-2 - English version, PN-EN 206-1 - English version", while the card has NEITHER the heading "Withdrawn" NOR a "Date of withdrawal" row. We checked PN-EN 206-1: it is "Concrete — Part 1: Specification, performance, production and conformity", published 18-06-2003 and itself withdrawn on 28-04-2014. The field therefore points to documents OLDER than this standard rather than to its successors — a relic of the time when the concrete standard was divided into parts. Reading that field mechanically would lead to the conclusion that a standard in force has been superseded by a document twenty years its senior.
PLACE IN THE SYSTEM OF DOCUMENTS. The PN-EN 12350 series describes testing of fresh concrete, the PN-EN 12390 series testing of hardened concrete, PN-EN 13791 the assessment of concrete in a finished structure. All of them measure; PN-EN 206 sets the requirements and the rules for assessing conformity. Aggregates for concrete are subject to a separate product standard, PN-EN 12620, described in this knowledge base.
WHAT WE DO NOT GIVE. We do not have the text of the standard — PKN supplies it for a fee (100 pages, KT 274 — the PKN technical committee for Concrete). We therefore GIVE NEITHER the list of strength classes, NOR the designations and requirements of exposure classes, NOR the limitations on composition, NOR the conformity criteria. The card lists the AREAS of requirements, not their content.
REACH OF CITATIONS: ZERO. Reading of 23.09.2026 on the working copy of the accreditation-scope database: the string "EN 206" does not occur in the reference-document field EVEN ONCE, in any form of the record. That this is not silence of the tool can be seen from the positive control on the same column and the same domain: concrete test methods from the PN-EN 12390 series stand in 244 entries of the scopes at 65 laboratories (all records of the number with a part). The product itself occurs in the scopes only as a word: a test object containing the word "beton" [concrete] in any grammatical case (beton, betonu, betonie, betonem…), without the adjective "betonowy", is found at 88 laboratories in 646 entries, and the number PN-EN 206 does not appear in any field — neither as a reference document nor in the test object (measurement 23.09.2026). WHAT THIS ZERO DOES NOT MEAN: it does not result merely from the fact that PN-EN 206 is a requirements standard — the product standard PN-EN 197-1 (cement) stands in the reference-document field at 4 laboratories in 35 entries, among others for the calculation of reactive CaO and SiO2 and for loss on ignition (the same copy, 23.09.2026). Why there is zero for PN-EN 206, we have not established.
Method principle
Concrete is a specified product: the purchaser states the requirements, the producer answers for meeting them and runs production control, and conformity is assessed against the criteria contained in the standard. The document covers seven areas — from the requirements for the constituents to the evaluation of conformity — so testing a single property is only one element of the verification and not a judgement on the product.
Applications
- Specifying concrete for structures cast in situ and for precast components
- Factory production control in ready-mixed concrete and precast plants
- Assessing the conformity of concrete delivered to site
- The reference document for the method entries of the PN-EN 12350 and PN-EN 12390 series

Step-by-step procedure
-
Read the specification of the concrete
The specification is one of the areas covered by the standard. It is what sets the test programme.
-
Establish which area the commission concerns
Verification of properties is one of the seven areas. A judgement on the conformity of the product requires the others as well — testing a single characteristic is not such a judgement.
-
Carry out the tests to the method standards
Sampling the fresh mix to PN-EN 12350-1, geometry of specimens to PN-EN 12390-1, strength testing to PN-EN 12390-3 on a machine to PN-EN 12390-4.
-
Refer the results to the requirements
The requirements and conformity criteria are in the text of the standard. WE DO NOT GIVE them — the card lists areas, not values.
-
Record in the report
Give the full designation of the standard including the amendment element: PN-EN 206+A2:2021-08.

Frequently asked questions
Which standard describes this test?
The test is performed according to PN-EN 206+A2:2021-08 (wersja polska; wprowadza EN 206:2013+A2:2021 [IDT]) — “Concrete — Specification, performance, production and conformity”.
How does this method work?
Concrete is a specified product: the purchaser states the requirements, the producer answers for meeting them and runs production control, and conformity is assessed against the criteria contained in the standard. The document covers seven areas — from the requirements for the constituents to the evaluation of conformity — so testing a single property is only one element of the verification and not a judgement on the product.
What is the measuring range and accuracy?
Kind of document: A PRODUCT standard — specification, performance, production and conformity; Kinds of concrete covered: Normal-weight, heavy-weight and lightweight; cast in situ, ready-mixed or from a precast plant; compacted or self-compacting; Seven areas of requirements (from the card scope): Constituents; properties of the fresh mix and of hardened concrete and their verification; limitations on composition; specification; delivery of the fresh mix; production control procedures; conformity criteria and evaluation of conformity; The condition in item (2): The concrete is to contain no more than a negligible amount of ENTRAPPED air — air deliberately introduced by air-entrainment is not limited by this.
