Overview

Cement setting time is one of the most important technological parameters, determining the time window for transport, placing and finishing of concrete or mortar mix. Standard PN-EN 196-3 describes the method for determining initial and final setting time using Vicat apparatus and testing of cement soundness (expansion).

Vicat apparatus is a device in which a movable rod with load (mass of moving parts 300 ± 1 g) freely falls and penetrates into cement paste placed in Vicat ring. For determining initial setting time, a 1.13 ± 0.02 mm diameter needle is used, and for final setting time — a needle with annular attachment.

Testing begins with determination of standard consistency — such amount of mixing water at which the Vicat plunger (Ø10 mm) penetrates the paste to a depth of 6 ± 2 mm from the bottom. Then paste of standard consistency is prepared and setting progress is tested. Initial setting is the moment when the needle stops at 6 ± 3 mm from the bottom. Final setting — when the needle penetrates ≤0.5 mm.

Standard PN-EN 197-1 requirements: initial setting not earlier than 60 min (classes 32.5 and 42.5) or 45 min (class 52.5). Final setting — no standard requirements, but usually 3–8 h. Soundness test (Le Chatelier) cannot exceed 10 mm.

Method principle

Vicat apparatus uses the penetration principle — a needle of known mass and diameter freely falls under its own weight into cement paste of standard consistency. As cement hydration progresses, the paste hardens and the needle penetrates less deeply. Initial setting is the moment when paste resistance is sufficient to stop the needle 6 ± 3 mm above the ring bottom. Final setting — when the needle penetrates only ≤0.5 mm. Vicat ring has dimensions: height 40 ± 0.2 mm, internal diameter 70–80 mm.

Step-by-step procedure

  1. Station preparation

    Set Vicat apparatus in room at 20 ± 1°C. Check rod freedom of movement. Mount Ø10 mm plunger (consistency).

    Weigh 500 g cement. Add estimated water amount (approx. 125–150 g). Mix per program. Fill ring. Release plunger.

    Plunger should stop 6 ± 2 mm from bottom. If different penetration — repeat with water correction (±5 g). Iterate to obtain result.

    Prepare paste with standard consistency (known water amount). Fill Vicat ring on oiled glass plate. Level.

    Mount Ø1.13 mm needle. Every 10 min remove ring, position under needle, release. Read penetration. Initial setting = needle stops 6 ± 3 mm from bottom.

    Fill Le Chatelier ring with standard consistency paste. Store 24 h in chamber. Measure needle spacing A. Boil in water 3 h. Measure spacing B. Expansion = B - A.
