🛣️ Wheel tracking of bituminous mixtures — resistance to permanent deformation, PN-EN 12697-22
In short
Assessment of the susceptibility of bituminous mixtures to deform under load on the basis of the rut formed by repeated passes of a loaded wheel at constant temperature; mixtures with an upper sieve size up to 32 mm, three types of device. The test is performed according to PN-EN 12697-22+A1:2024-05 (wersja angielska; wprowadza EN 12697-22:2020+A1:2023 [IDT]); Scope from the PKN card: Mixtures with an upper sieve ≤ 32 mm; laboratory specimens or specimens cut from a pavement; rut after repeated passes of a loaded wheel at constant temperature. The procedure comprises 4 steps; it is used for: Assessment of the resistance of bituminous mixtures to permanent deformation (rutting), Specimens made in the laboratory or cut from a pavement (card).

Overview
SCOPE FROM THE PKN CATALOGUE CARD, IN FULL (our translation): "This document describes test methods for determining the susceptibility of bituminous materials to deform under load. The test is applicable to mixtures with an upper sieve size less than or equal to 32 mm. The tests are applicable to specimens prepared from asphalt mixtures manufactured in the laboratory or cut from a pavement; the test specimens are placed in a mould so that their surface is flush with the upper edge of the mould. The susceptibility of bituminous materials to deform is assessed by the rut formed by repeated passes of a loaded wheel at constant temperature. In accordance with this document, three alternative types of device may be used: large-size devices, extra-large-size devices and small-size devices. With large-size and extra-large-size devices, the specimens are conditioned in air during testing. With small-size devices, the specimens are conditioned in air or in water. NOTE Large-size and extra-large-size devices are not suitable for use with cylindrical cores."
WHAT FOLLOWS FROM THE SCOPE ITSELF. The test covers mixtures with an upper sieve up to 32 mm; the specimens may be made in the laboratory or cut from a pavement. The standard allows three types of device — large, extra-large and small — and the conditioning depends on the type: in large and extra-large ones only in air, in small ones in air or in water. Cylindrical cores are not tested in large and extra-large devices.
WHAT LABORATORIES PERFORM. In 21 of 23 laboratories the record of the technique reads, with minor differences, "wheel tracking by method B (in air), small device" (koleinowanie metodą B (w powietrzu), mały aparat) — that is, the variant of the small-size device with conditioning in air; one of them (AB 937) entered in one entry a large device as well as the small one. The test is called "Resistance to permanent deformation" (Odporność na deformacje trwałe) or "Susceptibility to deformation under load" (Podatność na deformacje pod obciążeniem); the measuring range is given by 8 entries — 7 as "(0 – 20) mm", one (AB 1591) as "WTS = (0 – 1.5) mm/1000 cycles AIR PRD = (0 – 30) % AIR". The subjects are bituminous mixtures, in two records also asphalt pavements. What the letter "B" means in these records does not follow from the card — WE DO NOT GIVE IT.
FOUR EDITIONS IN THE SCOPES. The current edition (status of the card as of 23.09.2026) is PN-EN 12697-22+A1:2024-05 in the English version (31 pages, KT 212 Road Construction and Maintenance), adopting EN 12697-22:2020+A1:2023 [IDT]; according to the card it replaces PN-EN 12697-22:2020-07 — English version. In accreditation scopes (measurement of 23.09.2026): edition +A1:2024-05 — 20 records, 2020-07 — 6, 2008 — 3, +A1:2008 — 1, the number alone without a date — 3; seven laboratories entered several editions at once in one entry (AB 423, AB 1486, AB 1523, AB 1532, AB 1538, AB 1544, AB 1689 — two of them, AB 1486 and AB 1538, in one record, the others in separate ones). Chain of editions according to the cards: PN-EN 12697-22:2008 (English version) → PN-EN 12697-22+A1:2008 (Polish version, published 22-07-2008, withdrawn 28-07-2020) → PN-EN 12697-22:2020-07 (English version, published 28-07-2020, withdrawn 20-05-2024) → PN-EN 12697-22+A1:2024-05. All editions cited in the scopes, except the current one, are therefore withdrawn.
OTHER PARTS OF THE SERIES IN THIS DATABASE: 12697-2 (grading), 12697-5 (density), 12697-6 (bulk density of specimens), 12697-8 (air voids), 12697-27 (sampling), 12697-36 (thickness of pavement) and 12697-1 (soluble binder content).
WHAT WE DO NOT GIVE. We do not have the text of the standard — PKN sells it. That is why WE DO NOT GIVE the test temperature, the wheel load, the number of passes, the specimen dimensions, the method of calculating the result or the differences between the procedures designated in the scopes by letters.
SCALE OF CITATIONS (measurement of 23.09.2026). The key "PN-EN 12697-22" — 23 laboratories / 25 entries, the same as across all forms of notation. The key does not catch other parts of the series: there are no numbers beginning with "12697-22" other than this part in the scopes.
Method principle
The susceptibility of a bituminous mixture to deform is assessed by the rut formed by repeated passes of a loaded wheel at constant temperature; the specimen lies in a mould so that its surface is flush with the upper edge of the mould. This is how the PKN card describes the test; WE DO NOT GIVE the test parameters.
Applications
- Assessment of the resistance of bituminous mixtures to permanent deformation (rutting)
- Specimens made in the laboratory or cut from a pavement (card)
