Overview
STATUS OF THE DOCUMENT: STANDARD WITHDRAWN. The PKN catalogue card has the heading "Withdrawn and replaced by PN-EN 16510-2-6:2023-06 - English version" and the line "Withdrawal date: 02-06-2023". Both records agree, and the "Replaced by" field indicates one item — product part PN-EN 16510-2-6:2023-06.
SCOPE FROM THE PKN CATALOGUE CARD, QUOTED VERBATIM (our translation): "Test methods are given and requirements are specified for the design, manufacture, construction, safety, use and marking of pellet-fired heating appliances for heating residential rooms, with a nominal output of up to 50 kW".
THE WITHDRAWAL DATE AND THE PUBLICATION DATE OF THE SUCCESSOR ARE THE SAME DAY. Product part PN-EN 16510-2-6:2023-06 was published on 02-06-2023, and on the same day PN-EN 14785:2009 was withdrawn. For pellet appliances there was therefore not a single day without a product document — unlike roomheaters, fireplace inserts, cookers and boilers up to 50 kW, whose product standards were already withdrawn on 28-08-2018, while their product parts were created only in 2023.
THIS EXPLAINS THE DIVERGENCE IN ACCREDITATION SCOPES FROM 2018–2023. For almost five years two arrangements of documents for solid-fuel appliances were in force side by side in the collection of Polish Standards. For roomheaters, fireplace inserts, cookers and boilers up to 50 kW the new general part PN-EN 16510-1:2018-08 was in force, and the old product standards were already withdrawn. For pellet heaters, on the other hand, the old product standard PN-EN 14785:2009 was STILL in force, because their product part did not yet exist. A laboratory accredited in those years for testing pellet appliances HAD TO cite PN-EN 14785, even though the 16510 series was already in force for the neighbouring group of appliances. The transitional state closed within two days: on 01-06-2023 the general part of 2018 was withdrawn, replaced by the 2023-06 edition, and on 02-06-2023 PN-EN 14785:2009 was withdrawn.
WHAT THE SUCCESSOR BROUGHT. Product part PN-EN 16510-2-6 covers not only roomheaters, but also inset appliances and cookers with mechanical feeding of wood pellets — the scope is therefore broader than in the old standard, which spoke of pellet-fired heating appliances for heating residential rooms. The output limit has remained the same: a nominal heat output up to 50 kW. As described by an employee of an accredited notified laboratory, new in the scope of tests for pellet heaters and cookers are the tests of loss of heat removal (checking the operation of the safety temperature limiter), of electrical power failure and the check of the operation of the temperature controller.
WHAT PN-EN 14785:2009 ITSELF REPLACED. The card states that it replaced PN-EN 14785:2006 (English version). It adopted EN 14785:2006 [IDT]. It is therefore the Polish language version of a document that previously existed in the PN collection only in English — the EN number and year remained the same, the language version and the year of the PN edition changed. This distinction is sometimes a source of incorrect citations: "PN-EN 14785:2006" and "PN-EN 14785:2009" are the same European document in two versions of the PN collection.
WHAT WE DO NOT GIVE. We did not have the text of the standard — PKN sells it (69 pages, ICS 97.100.30). WE DO NOT GIVE: the requirements, limit values, test conditions or measurement methods from the text of this standard. For tests carried out today the appropriate document is PN-EN 16510-1 together with the product part PN-EN 16510-2-6.
Method principle
The standard gave test methods and requirements for the design, manufacture, construction, safety, use and marking of pellet-fired heating appliances for heating residential rooms with a nominal output of up to 50 kW. As the only one of the group of old product standards it remained in force without interruption until the day of publication of its own product part of the 16510 series. We do not give the content of the tests themselves — we did not have the text of the standard.
Applications
- Recognising an outdated citation in a laboratory's accreditation scope
- Establishing the appropriate successor when updating the documentation of a pellet appliance
- Reading documentation and test reports from before 02-06-2023
- Explaining why accreditation scopes from 2018–2023 cite two different arrangements of standards for neighbouring groups of appliances
- Distinguishing the edition PN-EN 14785:2006 from PN-EN 14785:2009 — the same EN document in two versions of the PN collection

Step-by-step procedure
-
Recognising the citation
Find in the accreditation scope, in product documentation or in a report the number PN-EN 14785 in the 2006 or 2009 edition.
-
Checking the date of the document in which the citation stands
A report from before 02-06-2023 cites the standard according to the state at that time and remains correct — also when it dates from 2018–2023, when the 16510 series was already in force for the neighbouring groups of appliances.
-
Establishing the appropriate successor
For appliances with mechanical feeding of wood pellets: the general part PN-EN 16510-1:2023-06 TOGETHER WITH the product part PN-EN 16510-2-6:2023-06.
-
Checking the method of fuel feeding
Product part 2-6 covers appliances with MECHANICAL pellet feeding. An appliance burning pellets but with manual feeding goes to product part 2-1 or 2-3 — wood pellets are on the list of permitted fuels in both.
-
Taking the new safety tests into account
The successor introduces tests that the old standard did not have: loss of heat removal (safety temperature limiter), electrical power failure and the check of the operation of the temperature controller. The scope of the order must be extended to include them.
-
Distinguishing two PN editions of the same EN standard
PN-EN 14785:2006 (English version) and PN-EN 14785:2009 (Polish version) adopt the same document EN 14785:2006. The difference concerns the language version and the year of the PN edition, not the content of the European standard.

Health and safety (OHS)
- The entry concerns the status of a document, not a laboratory activity — the safety rules for testing pellet appliances are given by PN-EN 16510-1 and the product part PN-EN 16510-2-6
- A test must not be carried out according to a withdrawn standard and the result described as conforming to the reference document in force
Frequently asked questions
Which standard describes this test?
The test is performed according to PN-EN 14785:2009 (wersja polska; wprowadza EN 14785:2006 [IDT]) — “Residential space heating appliances fired by wood pellets — Requirements and test methods”.
How does this method work?
The standard gave test methods and requirements for the design, manufacture, construction, safety, use and marking of pellet-fired heating appliances for heating residential rooms with a nominal output of up to 50 kW. As the only one of the group of old product standards it remained in force without interruption until the day of publication of its own product part of the 16510 series.
What is the measuring range and accuracy?

What safety precautions apply?
The entry concerns the status of a document, not a laboratory activity — the safety rules for testing pellet appliances are given by PN-EN 16510-1 and the product part PN-EN 16510-2-6; A test must not be carried out according to a withdrawn standard and the result described as conforming to the reference document in force.
Which laboratory can perform this test?
The test is performed by laboratories accredited to ISO/IEC 17025. On LabCoda you can find them by the standard number PN-EN 14785.
