⛏️ Sampling of aggregates (PN-EN 932-1)
In short
Methods for sampling and reducing samples of aggregates, and definitions on which it depends what every later result concerns: batch, increment, bulk sample, representative sample, laboratory sample. The test is performed according to PN-EN 932-1:1999 (wersja polska; wprowadza EN 932-1:1996 [IDT]); STATUS (state of the PKN card on 22-09-2026): CURRENT despite its age — the card of PN-EN 932-1:1999 has neither the "Wycofana" [Withdrawn] header nor a "Data wycofania" [withdrawal date] row. Overview
WHAT THE STANDARD COVERS — ACCORDING TO THE CATALOGUE CARD. The scope quoted from the PKN card (reading of 22.09.2026): "Podano metody pobierania próbek kruszyw z urządzeń dostawczych, zakładów przygotowawczych, przetwórczych i składowisk. Podano metody zmniejszania próbek, opis urządzeń do pobierania i zmniejszania próbek, sposoby oznaczania, pakowania i transportu próbek. Ustalono treść sprawozdania z pobierania próbek oraz podano definicje: partii, próbki pierwotnej, próbki ogólnej, próbki reprezentatywnej, podpróbki, próbki laboratoryjnej oraz pobierającego próbkę" [Methods are given for sampling aggregates from delivery equipment, preparation plants, processing plants and stockpiles. Methods of sample reduction, a description of the equipment for sampling and sample reduction, and ways of marking, packing and transporting samples are given. The content of the sampling report is laid down, and definitions are given of: batch, increment, bulk sample, representative sample, sub-sample, laboratory sample and sampler].
THIS IS NOT A MEASUREMENT STANDARD — AND YET IT DECIDES THE RESULT OF EVERY MEASUREMENT. No number from an aggregate test concerns "the aggregate" in general: it concerns the LABORATORY SAMPLE, which was formed from the bulk sample, collected from increments taken from the BATCH. It is precisely this standard that defines these concepts. If the batch was defined differently from what the recipient of the result assumed, a measurement compliant with the standard describes something other than the recipient thinks — and nothing in the report will reveal this.
A STANDARD OF WIDE PREVALENCE — AND AT THE SAME TIME USED VERY NARROWLY. Measurement (22-09-2026): 58 entries at 41 laboratories. For comparison: PN-EN ISO 16968 (trace elements in biofuels) has 135 entries, but at eight laboratories — both numbers from one copy of the database and by the same measure (all forms of notation); in the second, independent copy the same standard has 55 entries with the same eight laboratories, so what is comparable is the NUMBER OF LABORATORIES, not the number of entries. Here each laboratory usually has ONE entry — and in 53 of the 58 entries the methodology is simply "Pobieranie próbek" [sampling]. AND AT THE SAME TIME ALMOST ALL CITATIONS INDICATE ONE CLAUSE OF THE STANDARD — 8.8. TWO NUMBERS, BOTH TRUE, DIFFERING IN DEFINITION — and we give both with their names (corrected 22-09-2026: previously they stood side by side without distinction, and one entry was counted twice). CLAUSE 8.8 AS THE ONLY CLAUSE CITED — 45 entries, in four notations: "p. 8.8" (26), "p.8.8" (15), "p. 8.8." (3), "pkt 8.8" (1) [p., pkt = clause]. CLAUSE 8.8 ANYWHERE IN THE NOTATION — 47 entries at 35 laboratories; the two additional ones are "PN-EN 932-1 p. 8.2, p.8.8, p.8.9" and "PN-EN 932-1:1999 p. 8.2 i 8.8" [i = and], that is, citations of several clauses at once. The rest of the 58: the standard as a whole (4), without a year (5), one "z wyłączeniem pkt. 8.4, 8.9" [excluding clauses]. Notations "8.8" with a comma at the end do not occur in this database even once — that part of our earlier description was inaccurate. THE FOUR NOTATIONS OF THE SAME CLAUSE DIFFER ONLY IN A SPACE AND A FULL STOP — and each of them is correct; for searching, they are four different strings.
A TRAP WHEN COUNTING — FOUND WHILE WRITING THIS ENTRY. The pattern "932-1" without a boundary gives 59 entries, because it also catches PN-EN ISO 20932-1 — a standard on TEXTILE PRODUCTS, in whose number the string "932-1" is part of a larger number. The true number is 58 entries at 41 laboratories. We state this because an entry in which a number is the main finding should disclose how it was counted.
WHAT IT REPLACED. The card gives "Zastępuje PN-B-06721:1987" [Replaces] — a national standard on sampling aggregates. How the two standards differ in content, WE HAVE NOT ESTABLISHED — we did not have the text of PN-B-06721:1987.
WHAT WE DO NOT GIVE. We did not have the text of the standard (28 pages, Polish-language version, Construction and Building Structures Sector, KT 108 Aggregates and Building Stone, ICS 91.100.15). WE DO NOT GIVE: the content of clause 8.8 or any other, the number and size of increments, the dimensions of the equipment for sampling and reduction, the rules for reducing the sample or the content of the definitions that the standard lays down. Nor have we established why it is precisely clause 8.8 that is cited almost always — we know that this is so, we do not know why, and we do not guess.
Method principle
Increments are taken from a batch of aggregate, combined into a bulk sample and reduced to a laboratory sample, maintaining representativeness at each stage. The standard describes where and with what to sample, how to reduce, how to mark, pack and transport the samples, and what the sampling report is to contain. We do not quote the content of these operations — we did not have the text of the standard.
Applications
- Taking an aggregate sample for testing on a construction site, in a quarry, at a stockpile and on acceptance of a delivery
- Establishing what an aggregate test result concerns — which batch it describes
- Assessment of the sampling report as a document separate from the test report
- Reading an accreditation scope in which clause 8.8 of this standard is cited

| Scale of citations | 58 entries at 41 LABORATORIES (measurement of 22-09-2026) — usually one entry per laboratory |
| Care when counting — the pattern boundary | the string "932-1" without a boundary gives 59 entries, because it catches PN-EN ISO 20932-1 (textile products), where it is part of a larger number. The true number: 58 |
| One clause instead of the whole standard — TWO NUMBERS WITH A NAMED UNIT | clause 8.8 AS THE ONLY CLAUSE CITED — 45 of 58 entries, in four notations: "p. 8.8" (26), "p.8.8" (15), "p. 8.8." (3), "pkt 8.8" (1) [p., pkt = clause]; they differ only in a space and a full stop, all are correct, and for searching they are four different strings. Clause 8.8 ANYWHERE IN THE NOTATION — 47 of 58 at 35 laboratories (two entries cite it together with 8.2 and 8.9) |
| Other forms of citation — WITHOUT the entries already counted under clause 8.8 | the whole standard with a year (4 entries), without a year (5), "z wyłączeniem pkt. 8.4, 8.9" [excluding clauses] (1), one entry together with PN-EN 13286-1:2022-04. The entries "p. 8.2 i 8.8" and "p. 8.2, p.8.8, p.8.9" ARE NOT COUNTED HERE — they stand above, in the number "8.8 anywhere" (47). Previously the first of them was counted in both places at once; corrected 22-09-2026 |
| Methodology in the scopes | in 53 of the 58 entries it is simply "Pobieranie próbek" [sampling]; three entries specify "ze składowisk" [from stockpiles]. In accreditation scopes sampling is an ACTIVITY, not a measurement — the entry has no measuring range or unit |
| What it replaced — a chain confirmed from BOTH cards | PN-B-06721:1987 "Kruszywa mineralne — Pobieranie próbek" [Mineral aggregates — Sampling], Polish-language version, publication 23-06-1987. The card of the predecessor has the header "Wycofana i zastąpiona przez PN-EN 932-1:1999" [Withdrawn and replaced by], the row "Data wycofania: 07-01-1999" [withdrawal date] and the "Zastąpiona przez" [Replaced by] field; the card of the standard in force gives "Zastępuje PN-B-06721:1987" [Replaces] — both sides agree (reading of 22.09.2026). How the two standards differ in content, WE HAVE NOT ESTABLISHED — we did not have the text of the predecessor |
| Why precisely clause 8.8 | WE HAVE NOT ESTABLISHED THIS. We know from the measurement that clause 8.8 is the only clause cited in 45 of the 58 entries, and appears in 47; we do not know the reason, because we did not have the text of the standard, and we do not guess it |
| Content of the standard | WE DO NOT GIVE IT — we did not have the text. This concerns the content of clause 8.8 and the others, the number and size of increments, the equipment for sampling and reduction, the rules of reduction and the wording of the definitions |

Step-by-step procedure
-
Establishing the batch
The batch is a concept defined in this standard and sets the boundary to which the result refers. It is established before sampling, not after testing — otherwise the result describes a set that nobody has defined.
-
Taking the increments
The place and the method depend on where the material is taken from: from delivery equipment, a processing plant or a stockpile. We do not give the number and size of increments — they are in the text of the standard.
-
Combining into a bulk sample
The bulk sample is formed from the increments and is to represent the batch. At this stage it is decided whether the further operations can give a result concerning the batch at all.
-
Reduction to the laboratory sample
The standard gives methods of reduction. Incorrect reduction gives a laboratory sample with a different particle size composition than the batch — and the testing of such a sample will proceed without any error signal.
-
Marking, packing and handing over to the laboratory
The ways of marking, packing and transport are part of the standard. A change in moisture or segregation of the particles during transport changes the sample before testing.
-
Drawing up the sampling report
The standard lays down its content. It is a document SEPARATE from the test report — and it is this document, not the result, that says what the test concerned.
Required equipment and apparatus

| Sampling equipment | The standard describes the equipment for sampling and sample reduction; we do not quote its dimensions and requirements — they are in the text, which we did not have | — |
