⛏️ Proctor Test — Optimum Moisture and Density

Construction PN-EN 13286-2

In short

Determination of maximum dry density and optimum moisture content by Proctor compaction method. The test is performed according to PN-EN 13286-2:2010; Standard Proctor rammer: 2.5 kg, drop 305 mm. The procedure comprises 6 steps (about 1 days 1 h 30 min–2 days 1 h 30 min in total); it is used for: Design of road and railway embankments, Compaction control of subgrade under foundations, Construction of earth dams and flood embankments.

Overview

Proctor test is a fundamental geotechnical test used to determine optimum compaction conditions for soils and mineral mixtures. Result is Proctor curve (density vs moisture) with two key parameters: maximum dry density (ρd,max) and corresponding optimum moisture (wopt).

On construction site, soil is compacted to compaction index Is ≥ 0.97–1.00 (ratio of achieved density to ρd,max from Proctor test). Insufficient compaction leads to settlements, pavement deformations, foundation damage.

Standard Proctor method: rammer 2.5 kg, drop height 305 mm, 3 layers × 25 blows. Modified Proctor method: rammer 4.54 kg, height 457 mm, 5 layers × 25 blows (higher compaction — roads, airports).

Method principle

Soil at known moisture content is placed in steel cylinder (Proctor mold) in layers and compacted by blows from rammer falling from specified height. Procedure is repeated for 5–6 different moisture contents (from dry to wet). For each point, dry density is calculated:

ρd = ρ / (1 + w)

where ρ — wet density, w — moisture content. Curve ρd(w) is plotted. Curve maximum gives ρd,max and wopt.

Step-by-step procedure

  1. Soil preparation

Air-dry soil. Sieve through 20 mm (or 31.5 mm for ø150 cylinder). Prepare 5 portions of ~2.5 kg each.

    ⏱ Time: 24–48 h

  2. Moistening I portion

Add water (starting moisture ~wopt-6%). Mix thoroughly. Leave 24 h in sealed bag (moisture equilibration).

    ⏱ Time: 5 min + 24 h

  3. Compaction

Fill cylinder in 3 layers (standard) or 5 layers (modified). Compact each layer with 25 rammer blows (evenly over surface). Level final layer.

    ⏱ Time: 10 min

  4. Weighing and moisture

Remove extension collar. Level soil to cylinder rim. Weigh cylinder with soil. Take sample for moisture determination (drying 105°C).

    ⏱ Time: 15 min + 24 h drying

  5. Subsequent points

Repeat for 4–5 moisture contents (increase by 2–3%). Continue until density starts decreasing (passed optimum). Min. 2 points on wet side.

    ⏱ Time: 5 × 30 min

  6. Curve plotting

Plot curve ρd vs w. Read ρd,max and wopt from maximum. Check curve smoothness (min. 5 points).

    ⏱ Time: 30 min
