🔬 Weldable reinforcing steel — general, PN-EN 10080
In short
The standard sets general requirements and definitions for the performance of weldable ribbed steel for the reinforcement of reinforced concrete structures — for five forms of the product: bars, coils, decoiled products, welded fabric and lattice girders. The test is performed according to PN-EN 10080:2007 (wersja polska; wprowadza EN 10080:2005 [IDT]); Subject of the standard: Weldable RIBBED steel for the reinforcement of reinforced concrete structures. The procedure comprises 5 steps; it is used for: Assessment of reinforcing steel delivered as bars, coils, decoiled products, welded fabric and lattice girders, The reference document for mechanical testing of reinforcing steel, Control of reinforcement deliveries to site.

Overview
THE SCOPE FROM THE PKN CATALOGUE CARD, IN FULL: "General requirements are specified and definitions are given for the performance of weldable ribbed steel used for the reinforcement of reinforced concrete structures, delivered as finished products in the form of: bars, coils (wire rod, wire), products decoiled from a coil, sheets of welded fabric made in industrial production, and lattice girders".
FIVE FORMS OF THE PRODUCT — AND WHY THAT IS NOT A DETAIL. The scope lists bars, coils (wire rod and wire), products decoiled from a coil, sheets of welded fabric "made in industrial production", and lattice girders. The same steel delivered in another form is a different product: a straight bar and a decoiled product have undergone different histories of deformation, and welded fabric additionally has joints that a single bar does not have. A test carried out on a bar therefore pronounces nothing about fabric made from the same steel.
THE WORD "WELDABLE" IS PART OF THE SUBJECT OF THE STANDARD. Not every reinforcing steel is weldable; weldability depends on the chemical composition, in particular on the carbon equivalent. The standard concerns weldable steel only — which matters when assessing older products or those from outside the European Union, where steels with other properties are encountered.
"GENERAL" IN THE TITLE — A FRAMEWORK DOCUMENT. The third element of the title indicates that the standard contains GENERAL requirements and definitions, not a full specification of particular grades. Steel classes, values of yield strength and tensile strength, and detailed requirements are sometimes given in national documents and in product standards that invoke this document. A reference to PN-EN 10080 alone therefore does not settle which grade of steel the tested sample corresponds to.
PLACE IN THE SYSTEM OF DOCUMENTS. Mechanical testing of reinforcing steel is carried out by methods such as tensile testing to PN-EN ISO 6892 — an entry on that method exists in this knowledge base and it is that entry which invokes PN-EN 10080. The concrete itself, in which the reinforcement works, is subject to PN-EN 206, which has its own entry in this knowledge base.
CAUTION WITH THE NUMBER. Alongside PN-EN 10080 the PKN catalogue holds: PN-B-10080 (documents of 1959 and 1971), PN-ENV 10080 (a prestandard of 2003–2004) and PN-S-10080 (withdrawn, from the road field). The first and the third are entirely different standards, the second is the preceding stage of the same European document. Searching for the string "10080" alone returns FOUR families — and we have no basis for claiming that this is the complete set.
WHAT WE DO NOT GIVE. We do not have the text of the standard — PKN supplies it for a fee (71 pages, KT 127 — the PKN technical committee for Metallurgical Raw Materials and Steel). We therefore GIVE NEITHER steel classes, NOR values of yield strength, tensile strength or elongation, NOR requirements for the ribs.
Method principle
Reinforcing steel is a product described by its performance: mechanical, geometrical (the ribbing that governs the bond with concrete) and technological, weldability among them. The standard gives general requirements and definitions for five forms of delivery, leaving the detailed values to the documents that invoke it.
Applications
- Assessment of reinforcing steel delivered as bars, coils, decoiled products, welded fabric and lattice girders
- The reference document for mechanical testing of reinforcing steel
- Control of reinforcement deliveries to site
- Assessment of bond — the ribbing is one of the properties covered by the standard

Step-by-step procedure
-
Establish the form of the product
Bar, coil, decoiled product, welded fabric or lattice girder. Testing one form pronounces nothing about another, even with the same steel.
-
Check whether the steel is weldable
The standard concerns weldable steel only. With products of unknown origin this is the first question.
-
Establish the detailed document
PN-EN 10080 gives general provisions; classes and values are sometimes found in the documents that invoke it. Citing this standard alone does not identify a grade.
-
Carry out the tests
Mechanical properties by the methods named in the detailed document; rib geometry to the requirements of the standard.
-
Record in the report
Give the form of the product, the grade of steel per the detailed document and the full designation of the standard with its year.

Health and safety (OHS)
- Reinforcing bars have sharp ends and burrs — gloves are required; coils under tension may spring open violently when the binding is cut
- A tensile test ends with the specimen fracturing — a guard around the working space of the machine is required
- TECHNICAL NOTE: the result of testing a bar is not a judgement on welded fabric made from the same steel — these are different forms of the product
