Overview

SCOPE FROM THE PKN CATALOGUE CARD, QUOTED VERBATIM (our translation): "This document applies to inset solid-fuel appliances with manual fuel feeding, with or without functional modifications, which operate without fire doors or with fire doors both in the closed state and closable and openable, and also covers open fires burning solid fuel. The surround of these appliances is integrated with the building […]".

A NOTE ON THE NAME, WHICH CAN BE MISLEADING. The title of the product part reads "Inset appliances including open fires" — not "fireplace inserts". Laboratories describe this product part in their offers precisely as concerning fireplace inserts, and this description is accurate as to the subject, but it is not the title of the document. In the accreditation scope and in the report the designation of the standard is cited, not its colloquial name.

WHAT DISTINGUISHES THIS PRODUCT PART FROM 2-1. Three things, all explicitly in the scope. First — the installation: the surround of the appliance is INTEGRATED WITH THE BUILDING, which changes the conditions of heat dissipation and the requirements for adjacent elements. Second — functional modifications are permitted, which product part 2-1 does not provide for. Third — the product part covers appliances operating WITHOUT FIRE DOORS and open fires, that is, cases in which the combustion chamber is permanently open to the room.

WHY AN OPEN FIRE IS A DIFFERENT MEASUREMENT CASE. An appliance operating without fire doors takes air directly from the room and cannot be closed tightly, so the tightness tests intended for appliances with a closed chamber are not applied to it. According to the description by a notified laboratory, for appliances of type B and BE — with an open combustion chamber — no tightness requirements are imposed, and instead the standby loss at a negative pressure of 1 Pa is determined.

DURATION OF THE TEST — THE SAME AS FOR ROOMHEATERS. The same source states that for inset appliances, including open fires, with intermittent burning of firewood the test duration at nominal heat output is 40 minutes, and for continuous-burning appliances fired with firewood — 1.5 hours. The measurement of dust emission runs throughout the burn-off of the fuel charge, counting from loading.

THE FIRE SAFETY TEST IS OF PARTICULAR IMPORTANCE HERE. An inset appliance stands in a surround made of building materials, often adjacent to combustible elements. According to the description by a notified laboratory, the test is carried out with the chimney draught set to 15±2 Pa, with a charge of fir wood with a mass of at least 150 % of the mass of the fuel used for the balance tests, and the temperatures recorded in the radiation zone must not exceed the ambient temperature by more than 65 K. The distances of the measuring walls from the appliance are set by the manufacturer — and it is the manufacturer's declaration on the protection of combustible elements that the test verifies.

IT REPLACES ONE STANDARD AND SIX OF ITS AMENDMENTS. The "Replaces" field of the card lists: PN-EN 13229:2002 (Polish version) and PN-EN 13229:2002/A1:2005, /A2:2006, /AC:2007, /AC:2014-09 in the Polish version and /A2:2005 in the German and English versions. For a laboratory this means that a citation of the old standard with any amendment is today outdated in its entirety — it is not enough to update the amendment alone.

THE PRODUCT PART DOES NOT WORK ON ITS OWN. It is ALWAYS applied together with the general part PN-EN 16510-1, which contains the test methods common to the whole series. Citing product part 2-2 alone in an accreditation scope is not enough to describe the test; citing part 1 alone, in turn, does not indicate the type of appliance. Both documents should be in the report.

WHAT WE DO NOT GIVE. We did not have the text of the product part — PKN sells it (44 pages, ICS 97.100.30, English version). WE DO NOT GIVE: the emission and efficiency limit values, the full test conditions, the method of referring concentrations to the oxygen content of the flue gas or the rules for calculating the results.

Method principle

The appliance is installed on a rig reproducing the conditions of an installation integrated with the building and manually fed solid fuel is burned, while thermal quantities and the composition of the flue gas are measured according to the general part of the series. Product part 2-2 adds to this the extension of the scope to appliances operating without fire doors and to open fires, the admission of functional modifications, and the fire safety test carried out at a set chimney draught, which verifies the manufacturer's declaration on the protection of combustible elements around the appliance.

Are the results of tests according to the replaced standard comparableNOT AUTOMATICALLY. The test method itself has changed — the durations of the balance tests, the method and periods of dust emission measurement and the scope of the safety tests. The notified body TÜV SÜD states that the data from previous reports must be CHECKED for conformity with the new requirements, and if they do not conform, a repeat test may be necessary, in some cases even a new type test
Transition datesCommission Implementing Decision (EU) 2023/2461 of 07-11-2023 adopted the product parts of the 16510 series as harmonised standards; the coexistence period of the new and old standards lasted from 09-11-2023 to 09-11-2024; after 09-11-2025 every product placed on the market must have a Declaration of Performance updated according to the new requirements

Step-by-step procedure

  1. Checking whether the appliance belongs to this product part

The installation decides: a surround of the appliance integrated with the building. A freestanding or built-in appliance without such a surround goes to product part 2-1, and an appliance with mechanical pellet feeding — to 2-6.

  2. Establishing how the fire doors operate

Without fire doors, with doors only closed, or with closable and openable doors. This decides whether the tightness test or the measurement of standby loss is applied.

  3. Reproducing the installation on the rig

The appliance is installed according to the manufacturer's instructions and the requirements of the general part of the series. WE DO NOT GIVE THE DETAILS OF THE INSTALLATION — they are in the text of the standard.

  4. Balance test at nominal heat output

With intermittent burning of firewood 40 minutes, with continuous burning 1.5 hours. Recording of the emission parameters and measurement of dust start just after the fuel is loaded.

  5. Measurement of tightness or standby loss

For appliances with a closed chamber — the tightness test according to the general part. For appliances with an open chamber (types B and BE) — the standby loss at a negative pressure of 1 Pa.

  6. Fire safety test

Chimney draught set to 15±2 Pa; a charge of fir wood with a mass of at least 150 % of the mass of the fuel from the balance tests. The temperatures of the walls in the radiation zone are measured — the rise not more than 65 K above ambient temperature.

  7. Compilation of results citing BOTH documents

In the report cite product part PN-EN 16510-2-2 TOGETHER WITH the general part PN-EN 16510-1. If the documentation cites PN-EN 13229:2002 with any amendment, the citation is outdated in its entirety.

Frequently asked questions

Which standard describes this test?

The test is performed according to PN-EN 16510-2-2:2023-06 (wersja angielska; wprowadza EN 16510-2-2:2022 [IDT]) — “Residential solid fuel burning appliances — Part 2-2: Inset appliances including open fires”.

How does this method work?

The appliance is installed on a rig reproducing the conditions of an installation integrated with the building and manually fed solid fuel is burned, while thermal quantities and the composition of the flue gas are measured according to the general part of the series. Product part 2-2 adds to this the extension of the scope to appliances operating without fire doors and to open fires, the admission of functional modifications, and the fire safety test carried out at a set chimney draught, which verifies the manufacturer's declaration on the protection of combustible elements around the appliance.

What is the measuring range and accuracy?

Subject of the product part: Inset solid-fuel appliances with manual fuel feeding and open fires burning solid fuel; Surround of the appliance: Integrated with the building — this distinguishes product part 2-2 from 2-1 (freestanding or built-in heaters); Functional modifications: Permitted — appliances with or without functional modifications; Fire doors: Covered: appliances without fire doors and with doors closed, as well as closable and openable.

How long does the test take?

The procedure comprises 7 steps. The standard does not give a duration for every stage — the laboratory's own procedure decides.

What equipment is required?

Test rig for inset appliances, Test corner with walls, Flue gas analysers (CO, NOx, OGC), System for measuring dust in flue gas, System for measuring standby loss, Multichannel temperature recorder.

Where is this test used?

Initial type testing (ITT) of fireplace inserts intended for installation; Tests of open fires and of appliances operating without fire doors; Tests for the declaration of performance of a construction product in system 3; Verification of the distances from combustible elements declared by the manufacturer; Updating of citations in the accreditation scope after the withdrawal of PN-EN 13229:2002 with amendments.

What safety precautions apply?

Appliances without fire doors and open fires release flue gas into the test room — effective ventilation and a CO detector are required; The fire safety test is a deliberate thermal overload — constant supervision and fire protection of the rig; The surround heats up over its entire surface — risk of burns outside the appliance itself; Flue gas from wood contains polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons — sampling through a closed system; Ash and unburnt wood are removed after cooling down, into non-combustible containers.

Which laboratory can perform this test?

The test is performed by laboratories accredited to ISO/IEC 17025. On LabCoda you can find them by the standard number PN-EN 16510-2-2.
