🔥 Moisture in the general analysis sample of solid biofuels — PN-EN ISO 18134-3

Petrochemistry PN-EN ISO 18134-3

In short

Determination of moisture in the general analysis sample of solid biofuels by drying the sample in an oven. The test is performed according to PN-EN ISO 18134-3:2023-12 (wersja angielska; wprowadza EN ISO 18134-3:2023 [IDT] i ISO 18134-3:2023 [IDT]); Scope from the PKN card: Moisture in the general analysis sample, drying the sample in an oven, all solid biofuels. The procedure comprises 4 steps; it is used for: Moisture of the general analysis sample determined at the same time as other properties of the same sample — e.g. calorific value, volatile matter, metals (examples from the card), Testing of solid biomass — solid biofuels (subject from accreditation scopes).

Overview

SCOPE FROM THE PKN CATALOGUE CARD, IN FULL (our translation): "This document describes the method of determining the moisture in the general analysis sample by drying the sample in an oven. The method described in this document applies to all solid biofuels. The moisture content of solid biofuels (as received) is always reported in relation to the total mass of the test sample (wet basis). Since biofuels with small particle sizes are highly hygroscopic, their moisture content depends on changes in the humidity of the atmosphere, and therefore the moisture content of the general analysis sample should always be determined at the same time as the other measured properties (e.g. calorific value, volatile matter content, metals, etc.)."

PART 3 IS NOT PART 1. The entry on PN-EN ISO 18134-1 (in this database) describes total moisture — the reference method. Part 3 concerns a different sample: the general analysis sample, on which further determinations are carried out. The card states why its moisture has to be measured together with them: finely ground biofuel is highly hygroscopic, so its moisture follows the humidity of the air. The determinations the card gives as examples — calorific value and volatile matter — have separate entries in this database (PN-EN ISO 18125, PN-EN ISO 18123).

THE CARD SPEAKS OF AN OVEN — THE SCOPES OFTEN OF THERMOGRAVIMETRY. The card describes the method as "drying the sample in an oven". In accreditation scopes — in the technique field or in the description of the test — 18 of the 26 laboratories visible in the tab give the thermogravimetric technique (TGA) with this standard, and 24 — the gravimetric method; 16 laboratories give both, and each of them gives a technique (across all 27 laboratories: TGA 19, gravimetric 25, both 17). Whether the text of the standard allows the determination in a thermogravimetric analyser — WE HAVE NOT ESTABLISHED: we do not have the text, and the card does not settle it. In the scopes the test is called "Moisture content in the analysis sample" (Zawartość wilgoci w próbce analitycznej); the subject is solid biomass — solid biofuel, in one record "Plant material" (Materiał roślinny) (AB 1656).

EDITIONS. The current edition (status of the card as of 23.09.2026) is PN-EN ISO 18134-3:2023-12 in the English version (16 pages, KT 144 Coke and Processed Solid Fuels), adopting EN ISO 18134-3:2023 and ISO 18134-3:2023 [IDT]. According to the card it replaces the 2015 edition — PN-EN ISO 18134-3:2015-11 — in both language versions, Polish and English. The card of the Polish version of the 2015 edition gives publication on 20-10-2017 and withdrawal on 04-12-2023, with the heading "Withdrawn and replaced by PN-EN ISO 18134-3:2023-12 - English version"; that edition itself replaced PN-EN 14774-3:2010. In accreditation scopes 46 of 48 records give the 2023-12 edition, and 2 — the number alone without a date; the 2015 edition does not appear in them even once.

WHAT WE DO NOT GIVE. We do not have the text of the standard — PKN sells it. That is why WE DO NOT GIVE the drying temperature and time, the sample mass, the constant-mass criterion or the calculation formula.

SCALE OF CITATIONS (measurement of 23.09.2026). The key "PN-EN ISO 18134-3" — 26 laboratories / 46 entries. One laboratory (AB 081) stays outside the tab: two of its records begin with the number of an in-house procedure, e.g. "Procedura Q/LCA/05/B:2022 PN-EN ISO 18134-3:2023-12". Across all forms of notation: 27 laboratories / 48 entries.

Method principle

The general analysis sample of a solid biofuel is dried in an oven and the moisture content is determined; the moisture of biofuels as received is reported in relation to the total mass of the sample (wet basis). That is what the PKN card says; WE DO NOT GIVE the temperature, the time and the criterion for ending the drying.

Step-by-step procedure

  1. General analysis sample

The determination is carried out on the same sample on which the other determinations are made — and at the same time as them (card).

  2. Drying

Dry the sample in an oven. WE DO NOT GIVE the temperature, the time and the constant-mass criterion — they are in the text of the standard.

  3. Result

The moisture of biofuels as received is reported in relation to the total mass of the sample (wet basis) — that is what the card says.

  4. Entry in the report

State the 2023-12 edition and the technique — in accreditation scopes the gravimetric method and thermogravimetry stand side by side with this standard.
